How to Arrange & Style Your China Cabinet

Recently married and moving into our first home, one of the many things that I learned was  how to organize and display our new china in a cabinet. Thanks to several tips from my mom and mother-in-law, I was able to fit some of our pieces in a small (& temporary) hutch. After some love and attention, the hand-me-down cabinet is serving its purpose until we find something larger! Below are five easy steps to help guide you in arranging your china cabinet in style.

1. Use your hutch to store a fancy china set

Traditionally, a china cabinet is used to put your best dishes on display. If you have an extensive china set, don't try to squeeze every single piece on display. Make sure to leave enough room for some or all of your dishes, silver, and glassware to fit comfortably while safely storing the rest.

2. Stack some, lean some

Lean a platter against a wall or stack a few plates with bowls on top to add height to each shelf. Adding your cake plate is another way to add height & incorporate a center piece. Lean the platter first, then stack the plates, bowls or cups in the front to conserve space.

3. Tuck in a few extra specials

Candles and vases filled with flowers are a couple great accessories to add to an open china cabinet. In addition, you could add a few special treasures to bring some life to your dinnerware and glassware arrangement.

4. Mix & match

When you have a couple different sets of china, you can mix and match the pieces. For instance, take one of your everyday bowls and stack it on top of several fine china plates. In an effort to save space, we had to do this is our china cabinet. (Shown in the picture above).

5. When in doubt, use symmetry

Go shelf by shelf and to make sure that each side matches the other. To spice things up, you can add a vase of flowers or a candle to make the cabinet look balanced but not duplicated.
